Formation of a Comprehensive and Balanced Theology Of Ministry by Women*
The Problem: There are many conflicting opinions concerning women’s participation in authoritative/leadership ministries. Some are based upon mere opinions, stereotypes, and cultural traditions handed down from generation to generation. Other “theologies” are based upon isolated passages of scripture written to solve specific, immediate problems which had arisen within particular and unique historical communities. A comprehensive theology must be based upon God’s heart purposes and intentions as illustrated by His plan for humankind, the Spirit’s activity, and Christ’s example. Such a theology should address each of the issues included in the outline which follows.
I. GOD’S INTENTIONS FOR HUMANKIND
A. Creation: Image of God, the Initial Commission, The Fall
B. Redemption: Salvation, the New Creation, Mission of the Church
C. Prophecy Concerning: the Church Age or Age of the Spirit
D. The Eternal Purposes of God to be ushered in at Christ’s Return
II. THE ACTIVITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WOMEN
A. Old Testament Accounts of the anointing and ministry of women
B. The Paradigm of the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost
C. New Testament Accounts of the anointing and ministry of women
D. Post- NT and Modern History Accounts of the anointing and ministry of women
III. THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS AS RECORDED IN THE GOSPELS
A. Jesus’ Attitude concerning cultural traditional restrictions
B. Jesus’ Treatment of women
C. Jesus’ Speech concerning women
D. Jesus’ Authorization and Commission of women
IV. SCRIPTURE PASSAGES WHICH RELATE TO WOMEN & MINISTRY
A. Foundational Passages (Not written to correct a women-ministry problem within a particular and unique community)
B. Difficult/Controversial Passages (Written to address a specific women-ministry conflict within a particular and unique historical community)
